In A Confession, a memoir of his philosophical midlife crisis, Tolstoy recounts falling into despair after coming to believe that life, and for matter all human is meaningless absurd. Although Tolstoy's account the origin phenomenology crisis widely regarded as illuminating, response namely, embracing religious tradition he had previously dismissed “irrational,” “incomprehensible,” “mingled with falsehood” seems unpromising, at best. Nevertheless, I argue, makes valuable contribution contemporary thought about meaning absurdity life. begin by drawing on classic discussions in literature, memoir, order characterize problem absurd, clarify relation between these problems. then draw form faith our deepest values. argue such supplies one important part story concerning how we might respond absurd - has been overlooked more recent issues.
